Premium pastured pork from a cross of heritage English Large Black and Spot pigs! About Us Pork & Greens is a small farm located along the banks of Snake Creek in Okmulgee county. We raise pigs on pasture, grow heirloom fruits and vegetables, and have a Brat Cart that we use to cook sausages at farmers' markets and festivals. We have two small farmhands, 2 year old Sawyer and 7 year old Savanna. Browse through our Products for Sale Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Our pigs are used in a rotation with our gardening, following this cycle: pigs->garden->clover. We use the pigs to pre-till and fertilize our garden plots, and they get to graze a lush clover/alfalfa mix in return. Our clover mix consists of red, ladino, and dwarf white clover, plus travois creeping alfalfa. We farrow and finish all our own pigs. Sows farrow in straw bedded arks we built ourselves. Piglets are weaned at 5 to 8 weeks of age, depending on the condition of their mother (older sows can usually nurse longer without losing body condition) Once weaned, pigs are placed in groups of 30 - 50 until marketed. We do not clip teeth or dock tails, nor do we use antibiotics, growth promotants, or hormones. Our pigs are processed at an award winning USDA inspected facility at Big Cabin, Ok. Additional Information Our breeding program is designed to combine the best attributes of two diverse pig types, the heritage English Large Black and the Spot. The Large Black is renowned for producing succulent, well marbled pork, the kind of pork you can no longer find at the grocery store. They're also the best females available to farrow outdoors, being extremely prolific, excellent milkers, and gentle with their pigs. Listed with the ALBC, the Large Black is an extremely rare pig, overlooked by the commercial industry because they didn't hold up well in confinement on concrete floors. Well, we don't think the pigs should be confined or on concrete, so we embrace their rareness. The drawback to the Large Blacks is they're slow growing, which is where the Spot pigs come into the picture. Long known as a dual purpose pig, Spots are a kind of rare modern pig, in that you don't see them much anymore except in show rings. They are fast growing pigs that perform well in outdoor environments, are good mothers, and convert feed to muscle efficiently. |
