 Natural Cutch Dyed Silk Habotai Lightweight Copper Marbled Scarf
Order number of scarfs. $18. 8x52". Natural dyes are unpredictable, so the artist brings out whatever the silk and dyestuffs want to express. Coppery marbled lightweight silk came from this dyeing adventure. I used natural Cutch, derived from Indian Acacia trees in a way that was discovered 2,000 years ago. My technique is updated from the traditional way, but I still ended up with cordovan red hands in making this scarf.
In Ayurvedic studies, cutch is a suitable dye for my Dosha. I'm not a learned student to know, but figure it is a good thing that I've chosen an ayurvedic companion, suited to my personality (since I do now have red hands). Its a comfort to know that the dye is also edible and used in Indian cuisine.
These colours range from dark copper penny brown to peach. It is a mystery why some places on the silk 'take' dye and other places wick it away. It is very pretty. Hand wash, dry on a towel, and you may iron it on a cool setting with spray starch if you'd like for it to look ironed.  Cedar Apple Rust Fungus Silk Scarf
Order number of scarves. Jackie Dill asked me if those neon orange cedar apple rust fungas starballs would yield a dye, and I just had to try it. Low and behold I found some little cedar trees coming up in my old garden spot, just dripping (literally) with cedar apple rust fungus. They were *really* close to my apple tress, too. So I harvested a stock of them and set to work, using vodka or grain alcohol (don't recall) to extract the delicate chemistry, and *POOF* *VOILA* the result was this gently parchment toned buttery creamy silk scarf that would be gorgeous with a mix of ivory, white, cream and other subtle colors in your outfit. Mushrooms and funguses used for dyeing are so rare, so most people don't know that items made from these dyes are best not line dried in bright sunshine due to sun fading.  Natural Dyed Silk Scarf- Equation
Order number of scarfs. This was my favorite scarf from several I made using cutch, a natural tree extract. Cutch has been used for 2,000 years. I am accustomed to using natural dyes that take a lot of hard work to set. But cutch is so refined that was like magic. I dyed this scarf and hung it to set, then put my hands into soda ash. Wow! They turned cordovan red! So I rebatched this scarf, adding soda ash, and watched as the colors transformed visibly fast, before my very eyes. The next day, I found it had taken on this mysterious streaking. So, dyeing is all about chemistry. One could describe the rate of flow and rate of chemical bond as different ph color moves thru the fabric, in some equations. Here's the equation-- reduced to the shorthand of visual. Read it like a barcode revealing the mystery of science. Colors are coppery, sometimes dark and bark-textured and sometimes fluid, faint and transparent.  Sanskrit Scrolls Madder Scarf - Soy Wax Resist Batik
Order number of scarves. I would be a big fake if I actually thought I could write in sanskrit. But I am a fan of mysterious writings, and so this silk scarf is scribbled with swirly things. It was a long, involved process to create it. Using soy wax I wrote on it, then dyed it using natural dye which I made with sticks. Actually stems and roots from the madder plant. This is the plant used in ancient times before Christ in the Middle East for coloring womens garments. If you have spent your life wearing colors invented in the 20th century, you may find it awesome (as I do) to wear colors that are so timeless that they were around in Biblical times. Its so cool. This scarf is going to be a bit crisper than, say, the Simple Madder Scarf, because of the waxing process. It can be gently ironed on cool with a towel or tissue on both sides.  Cherokee Squares, a Syllabary Quilt

I used four-inch squares of hand dyed (and other) cottons in all different colors that I made, then I wrote Cherokee syllables on them. They say that the more ways you experience something, the better you will learn it. So, knowing it takes 10,000 hours to learn Cherokee, this is one way to add more language learning into my life. Some of these squares will contain words instead of just letters. Part of the border is also blackberries. Blackberries are an important cultural food and they come out to be picked at about Father's Day. This quilt can be bought as just a quilt top ($100) that you can finish or give to someone to finish for you.  Cherokee Water Bug Quilt
Order number of quilts. Here is a really sweet quilt with a lot of little cool sewing scribbled on to it. It is called "Cherokee Water Bugs" because it has 2 big water bugs on it. If you know about Cherokee stories, then you will know that the water bugs are a part of how land was made. It also has a Cherokee seal in the middle of it.
The thing I like most about this quilt is that it is exuberantly bright in every corner. Some of the squares were purchased from sellers who represented them as Indonesian stamped batiks, but I am not enough of a fabric sleuth to guarantee anything except that they are diverse and play nicely together. I machine pieced it.
Dimensions of 82x76 make this quilt useful probably for a twin bed or cot, sofa snuggler, cabin quilt or topper for a full sized bed. Make sure those dimensions work for you, because like the women of olden days, Fluffy just stops makeing them when they are finished and my quilts are not necessarily to standard sizes.
Backing is solid black with black thread, and the fiberfill lining makes this a quilt that is lightweight. It will stay sort of puffy and new looking. Machine quilting is stipple with some freehand custom along the chintz border.

These fabrics were selected to go together on the day that my grandson, Kai Brinkley, was born. If you just want the quilt top, you can choose your own batting, back color, threads, machine quilting pattern (or freehand) and do the quilting by hand or machine then blind stitch or stitch in the ditch to finish off the edges. That will cost you about $350 in time and materials. Or, for $450 you can get a fully finished quilt and I will carry out your wishes about the color of backing, type of batting, thread color and machine quilting style or pattern (freehand art in itself!), the binding style and more.  Civil War Replica Quilt or Quilt Top with Cherokee History

Half of these are reproduction yard goods typical of the time of the Civil War. The other half are hand-dyed muslin which has been saddened or toned down a bit to give a more authentic aged look to the muslin. On each muslin square is a fact about Cherokee history during the Civil War Period. Typical larder supplies, numbers of orphans, surnames of warriors in the Mounted Rifles of the Confederacy led by Stand Watie or of the men in a company of the Cherokee Home Guards. Some squares contain popular quilt patterns of that time. Some contain pictures of folks like John Ross who played a decisive role in Cherokee history during the turmoil. This is a quilt top, priced at a modest $100 if purchased for you to quilt.
