I live on a farm near Blanchard, OK, with my Mom, Dad, three sisters and two brothers. Really, this all started with my little sister, Rebekah. She had a stroke before she was born and Mom started reading about goats and the therapeutic properties of goat's milk to help Rebekah's recovery. I asked for a goat for my birthday that year. That was three years ago, and we now have a herd of 28 registered Nubian dairy goats. The goats belong to my brother, Ethan, my sisters, Hannah and Miriam and me. We milk them ourselves twice a day. We organized a 4-H Dairy Goat Club in McClain County last year and now have 15 members selling goat's milk and goat's milk soap from their beautiful herds. We chose to sell through the OK Foods Coop so that we would not be competing with other 4-H ers at the local farmer's markets. The income from our milk and soap sales helps to buy feed, and I am saving my profit to buy a farm when I am older. As for Rebekah, she is recovering steadily. She loves the goats and enjoys their attention when we are in the barn working or milking. They make her happy. I hope one day she is able to milk her own goat. As for the eggs: Hannah, age 7, is in charge of feeding, watering, and tending the our flock of free range hens. She gathers and cleans the eggs daily with the help of her sister, Miriam. Hannah really likes the chickens, she sings to them. About the Brooms (written by mom) I find it intriguing how events often come full-circle. . . I spent a large part of my young life roaming the backwoods of the Ozark hills in Stone County, Arkansas. I learned many homestead skills from my parents and from my neighbors. As a craftsman/musician at the Ozark Folk Center State Park, I worked as a spinner, weaver, soap maker and chandler. I learned traditional broom making and wood carving from John Perry, a master broom maker at the park. Fourteen years later, I am teaching my nine year old son, Ethan, this craft of traditional broom making. He is so very enthusiastic! He has strong hands and great dexterity. He especially likes weaving the top on the broom handles. His work is artistic, sturdy, and functional. He has good attention to detail and takes pride in good craftsmanship. Ethan is carrying on the tradition of a fine old homestead skill. And, once again, we've come full circle. . . Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients Our soaps and shampoo bars are made with olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, and wheat germ oil, mixed with goat's milk and sodium hydroxide,(according to individual recipes) with butter, raw honey and oat meal added for their nutrient and therapeutic properties. The nourishing protein and enzymes of raw goat's milk make these soaps a cleansing agent suitable for the most sensitive skin. Our eggs are from free range happy hens. No antibiotics, no hormones, just healthy bugs and organic lay pellet. Ethan's brooms are made from raw broom corn. Lindsey, OK, used to be known as the broom corn capital of the world. . . until more lucrative crops edged out the broom corn industry in the 1970's. You can still see the old corn drying barns around the area. Now we order supplies out of Texas and South Carolina. The broom designs originate from Amish, deep south, Native American, Ozark and old world influences. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) On Cross Timbers Farm we raise grass fed beef, free range chickens, and registered Nubian dairy goats. We also steward two geriatric horses, three dogs, a passle of barn cats, and the school of fish and flock of parakeets that reside at the home school table. We use herbal parasite control for all our production animals and only homeopathic remedies (except in the direst extreme). All mineral and vitamin supplements are medication free, and we insure that all feeds and protein supplements are hormone free. We believe this is important even in soaps and lotions since nutrients and toxins are both readily absorbed through the skin. Additional Information We now have a farm web site. Highlights this Month Ethan has learned to made Kitchen Brooms and Cabin Brooms;the hens are laying again; we are spending nights up in the barn tending newborn goats and their mommas.
